Somernites Cruise in Somerset, KY

August 2007 Cruise

Somerset, Kentucky offered up the fantastic monthly Cruise in August that it has became famous for. The Saturday morning started out absolutely fantastic with a caravan over to the Cumberland Lake Drag Strip. Do we need to say anymore? The hot shoes had an awesome time with the heads up timed runs where you run what you brung. Us gear heads have a need for some speed and having the opportunity to satisfy that need, in a legal manner, is always appreciated.

Now for the cruise in. As if this event wasn't already an event to behold, it is getting even bigger. In July, they set a new all time high of entrants with over 1800 cars entered. For the August Cruise In, BP/Amoco public relations brought their live demonstration of different octane rated fuels. The vehicles have all been modified with some being outfitted with two different fuel rails. This enabled them to demonstrate the different octane rated fuels via live dyno runs. This made the second year for the program and they have had over 3 million spectators say “wow, I didn't know it would make that much difference.”

One of their trucks is the first interactive tanker ever to be used for display purposes. As you walk through the tanker, you are able to actually participate in a variety of ways. Another feature of the tanker is that shows the use of alternative fuels, in addition to the past, current, and possible future fuels.

BP/Amoco is this using to show that they are hard at work in the R&D department to develop fuels that will provide for cleaner engines. With cleaner burning engines we will produce less emissions, more miles per gallon and of course greater horse power for us gear heads.

One last thing about BP/Amoco. They are giving away a customized Mazda RX 8 that was done by the famous tuner Jay Laub. This awesome machine will be given away in December of this year and they have made it easy to enter. All you need to do is purchase 10,000 gallons of BP/Amoco gasoline. NO, I am only fooling with you. NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY. You can sign up on line at

In addition to BP/Amoco as corporate sponsors, Somernites Cruise have had Pepsi Cola bottling company, and a car hauling trailer manufacturer also become sponsors. Stay tuned for further details of new corporate sponsors as they will only help to increase the enjoyment of showing off our rides. The local GM dealer was supporting this month’s cruise in and they were in a black tie mood. They had ten, that is correct, ten of those black beauties scheduled for display. Oops. They had to change their count to nine as they sold one that morning.

Now back to the Cruise In. What would a car show be without food vendors and more food vendors? If you went hungry or thirsty at the August show, you must have stayed in only one spot. The food is good, reasonably priced, and having something for everyone’s pallet.

There are a number of automotive vendors present. You can buy new parts, used parts, fiberglass bodies, and they even have vendors there for the ladies. Now that is a nice thought. Now the women have a reason to come with us and enjoy the show.

The cars were rolling in fine style starting at two o'clock sharp. Boy do they have the parking process down to a science. Things were rolling right along in their usual fashion when the local radio station, that is a low power station just for the cruise in, put a real dampener on the festivities. It seems as though a severe thunder storm suddenly popped up West of Somerset. With that announcement everything abruptly came to a halt as it was suppose, I emphasize suppose, to hit Somerset within about five minutes. Do I need to say anymore? The parking stopped and everyone scattered for cover. Well wouldn't you know it, the storm came up to Somerset and then went around.

The show was brief, but we will all be back next month looking at the eye candy, show cars that is. Mark your calendar for the fourth weekend in September or if you can't make the show for September, then plan to attend the last show for 2007 in October. As Wolf Man Jack use to sign off, “Be There or Be Square”.
