13th ANNUAL BOONESBOROUGH BOOGIE NATIONALS - Lucky "13" Strikes!
13th ANNUAL BOONESBOROUGH BOOGIE NATIONALS by Shaun Smith
If Van Gogh would have painted a masterpiece about classic cars, it would have looked a lot like a scene from the Boonesborough Boogie Nationals .
If Shakespeare had written a short story collage about classic cars, it would include stories from the Boonesborough Boogie Nationals .
If John Lennon had sung a song about classic cars, it would have sounded a lot like the sounds at the Boonesborough Boogie Nationals .
Chevelles. Camaros. Cobras. Mustangs. Tractors. Rat Rods. Mopars. Cudas. Challengers. Flames. Hydraulics. These were all big hits at the 13th Annual Boonesborough Boogie Nationals . And, it ended up being lucky 13, because for the first time ever, the show produced over 1,000 registered cars! “I had a goal of this being a national event,” Art Bigelow, Vice President of the Southern Knights of Central Kentucky . “Breaking that 1,000-car mark puts us on the map!”
There was everything possibly imaginable at this show. And, there was a lot of top quality rides all weekend long. “The quality of cars here was higher than normal, but it's always fantastic,” explained Bigelow.
And, friends--yes, friends from all walks of life coming together for one friendly family outing based around the central idea of nostalgic echoes and distant beaches seems to bellow in the halls of this hobby.
The show kicked off on Fri., Oct. 10 with a beautiful sunshine day. Later that evening, participants enjoyed a free chili dinner provided by one of the food vendors on hand at the show.
Both Saturday and Sunday produced huge turnouts for the event as over 5,000 people showed up, along with 70 venders!
The jalapeno pepper eating contest on Saturday was something to see!
All weekend long, our good friend Charlie Napier pumped up the volume and kicked out the jams with some good old rock and roll. Charlie has a show on WRVK 1460AM in Renfro Valley, KY and has a website with some rich car show content at www.kentuckycarshows.com .
It wasn't, however, until Sun., Oct. 12, that I actually realized how much fun I was having. No, it wasn't until I requested Surfin' Bird by the Trashmen and began boogieing to that tune that it really hit me. Fun.
Yes, it was fun--and so were all the memories we Round-Up folks shared with the generous car hobbyists back in that state park located near Fort Boonesborough.
The 14th Annual Boonesborough Boogie Nationals will be held next October, and if 13 was lucky this year, you can bet on 14 being even better!
The Southern Knights of Central Kentucky would love to thank everyone for their support in making the 13th Annual Boonesborough Boogie Nationals a success.
