DAVE & ED'S SUPER AUTO EVENTS FALL 2008
DAVE & ED'S SUPER AUTO EVENTS FALL 2008 by Shaun Smith
In 1984, Ed and I had decided to quit racing because of the rising costs. Then, one evening, I received a call from one of our competitors, Jim Bishop. Now, Jim had raced for years, but had little success. His suggestion was for Ed and I to take all his equipment and go race. After an evening of doing inventory, it was decided we would sell his cars and parts and update with newer.
Well, we went to our first swap meet. What a rush–as we were pulling parts from the trailer, buyers were making us offers. On our trip home, we decided to start a business selling used racing equipment–Racer's Outlet. It grew fast and the demand was high. After the first year, it was evident that there were many racers that had parts to sell. So evolved the idea of our Pro-formance Swap Meet , and that year we had our first swap meet.
Year after year, the shows became more popular and larger. We had no plans of doing any more shows, than what we were doing. In fact, we had plans to buy a race track, and then another intervention.
The Canfield Fairgrounds Swap had been vacated and the vendors were disappointed. Ed and I were at a show in Randolph OH, passing out flyers for the Canton Pro-Forance Swap Meet , when we were convinced by a group of vendors to consider Canfield. That was 1993 and here we are today. From the time we started, our philosophy has always been take care of the customer and the vendors are our partners.
The benefits of our philosophy were never more evident than at our past September Canfield. In a constant steady rainfall from 3AM Friday until 4 PM Saturday, vendors and spectators came to the fairgrounds to buy and sell. Now, obviously from a financial outlook, a weekend like that is devastating. But looking back, it is extremely gratifying to have that support. In this day of greed and me first business ethics, it makes us feel good that simple old business philosophies still work.
The Pro-Formance Swap Meet will be held in Canton, OH at the Stark County Fairgrounds on November 8-9.
