Russo Steele Auction Site Struck by Severe Windstorm by Mark C. Bach
Arizona is host to seven different auctions in January. But this year along with rain, one site was struck by a severe windstorm.
At the Russo Steele auction site in Scottsdale, AZ two large tents collapsed during an auction event on Thurs., Jan. 21, 2010. Under the tents were collector cars waiting their time in the sun. The damage was so severe that city officials could not let the car owners in to inspect the cars until Saturday morning. The auction resumed for two days of bidding on Sunday and Monday
of the following week. Included in the damaged cars was the controversial Tucker convertible, which still went across the auction block on Sunday but didn't sell. Amazingly some cars sustained no damage, while others suffered damage from the collapsing tent poles and the rains that swept in. Only one person sustained minor injuries when the storm blew in.
The owners and insurance companies were still totaling up the damages. Co-owner of the auction Drew Alcazar expressed appreciation for all the support from collectors and buyers that remained for the abbreviated auction.
