Vanderbrink Auction Notes
Vanderbrink Auction Notes by Yvette Vanderbrink
Hello!
Well, spring was off to a good start and then decided to take a
detour. Tonight it’s supposed to get down to 33 degrees! What! The
other night it did that, too. But temps during the day are pretty
good, but today was cold. But I’m glad that I put away the sweaters
and big coats and boots. But we have quite a bit of mud the last few
days. We can use the rain. Steve and I and Johnathon planted 10 acres
of land with oats and pasture grasses. The rest we are renting out for
farm ground. We are waiting to do more fencing for pasture and much
needed room. We are 100% for calves and all are looking good. Lots of
Black Calves running around. More to go.
I had a horrible thing happen this last week. I fell into a sea of
Hubcaps and couldn’t get out. I was doing inventory at Grand Rapids,
MN and thought I would just walk across these hubcaps. I fell right
through and couldn’t get out. I just kept sinking. It was cutting my
ankles. The guy with me couldn’t reach me and I finally pulled on a
tree and a bumper and got myself out. It was just about enough. I
didn’t want to get hurt sinking by PMD hubcaps from the 60’s!
After a bunch of ticks and dirt. I got the pictures for Grand Rapids,
MN. So I’ll be loading those. It is funny though.
Steve, my husband and I, are celebrating our 19 year wedding
anniversary tomorrow! He says it seems like about 50, he has mentioned
that I’m not easy to live with at times. Hahahahahah. I say it’s
just exciting and not low key! It’s been lots of work, and been
through many things and many funny stories. We both have the same
backgrounds, dairy farms. WE both were raised in Christian Homes. My
folks are lots younger and were looser and wilder. My mom was 37 when
I graduated from High School. We learned that on 2-10-1965 both our
mothers went to Sioux Valley Hospital during a huge blizzard. Both
were in labor, but my mom went home and Steve was born. WE could have
been bassinette buddies in the same nursery! I was born 8 days later.
Steve loved cars and old stuff and played a lot in Lems Salvage yard
when visiting cousins in Doon, Iowa. I had a Dad that was a motor head
and we all were and are. Grew up at the Racetracks and collector cars,
helping find 1957 Chevrolets and more Chevrolets as car hounds and
houndettes. Then I was eating Tator Tots at the Tasty Freeze in
Luverne, MN and Steve saw me and said to one of his guys he worked
with, I’m going to marry her. I had no idea who he was. Little did I
know that he had a destiny? I met him on Norwegian Independence day.
He and a bunch of guys came flying into a local bar wrestling with all
the same shirts. They were crazy and I sat down and listened to wild
stories and laughed. I became friends with the “big” guy and we
dated on and off and he used to bring me smoked oysters and Budweiser
and we would talk about cars and stuff for hours. Eventually we got
engaged and here we are 2 kids and many things later. WE were so broke
when we got married and bought our farm. On our first anniversary, my
Dad gave us $120 and told us to go to the Calumet we stayed at on our
small 1 night Honeymoon. We didn’t, instead went and got Sara Lee
Pie, Steaks, and I made supper. WE were sitting around our coffee
table eating and Steve was going to say something romantic to me, I
looked and he had CORN stuck to his forehead! What the heck! It was
funny. How does someone do that? The next week we went to his folks
and ate and his Mom turned to say something and SHE had corn stuck to
her face! WE both laughed. Then he came to my house and my Dad was
hurling through Sweet Corn like a Machine and had corn all over his
face. It was funny. We’ve remodeled a house and lived in our yard in
a camper. That was a true test of any marriage. I had a 1 year old and
a 4 year old. I have pictures of feeding Johnathon surrounded by Barn
cats and chickens eating food that was flying off the highchair.
We
would have to sit in the pickup while they went to sleep and then go
in. All the animals on the farm thought they should be camping, too
and if it thundered or the alarm, under the camper was the dog, cats,
and chickens, all making noise and getting up at the same time as us.
WE have bought our place, and now bought 29.03 more acres, and who
knows what else will be in store. We’ve been broke, had money, broke
again, and who knows on that, too.
Every year for our anniversary Steve gets Boone’s Farm wine and
brings it home. Yeah, we used to drive around in the country and look
at land and farms and talk about what we wanted and drink cheap wine.
If that ain’t redneck love, and make a marriage I can’t tell you
what. When we were engaged, I had a lot to learn about some of
Steve’s past. I went to church with him to talk to the minister and
everyone was staring at my pants and cowboy boots. Then I noticed, I
was dressed a lot differently than other gals. I also remember asking
the minister to marry us and he asked when, I said “well, it can’t
be Mother’s Day and can’t be the last weekend of April”. He
asked why, and I answered, “That’s the first race at Huset’s
Speedway and the Start of the Madison Races!” We got in the pickup
and Steve said, “You don’t go to the races on Sunday here, and
don’t tell them we are working on Sunday”. Hahaha.
Well, every
weekend from Mother’s Day to Cheater’s Day in October was race day
at our house, still is with NASCAR. It was interesting. We’ve had 2
beautiful kids with an education for that. Emily is now 16 and had her
first Prom last week, and Johnathon is 13. We have gone through and
owned or own 85 old tractors, and countless vehicles. I went through
breast cancer, Steve lost his Brother, we’ve almost had our barn
burn down, and so many many more things happen. Many funny, funny
things. WE don’t fight much, if any. WE let each other have their
own space, and keep each other balanced. Most of all, we act real
around each other and talk real and act real around our kids. WE show
them what is important, and what hard work is and why. No sugar
coating here. That’s how I was raised, and Steve, and what we teach
them. My GRamma Johnson used to say, time goes fast, enjoy it.
She was
right. It seems like just yesterday when I was wearing my wild yellow
bra and driving my IROC and having fun and working on just having fun.
Then boom, the right guy rolled around and changed it all and life
started for real, what is important. Family, Faith, and Love. We learn
every day, and should learn every day to make it an adventure. It’s
so boring to just sit around and wait for it to happen, routine, shake
it up and see what you can do to change things and make a difference.
What is the legacy, what good did you do, did you help people, How did
the kids think, it’s all there. They say every day, is planned out
for us already, God knows all our steps, well, he’s had a great ride
so far, and can’t wait for the rest! He’s a great navigator.
Amazing how it takes a while to kick that to finally kick in 100% and
we still keep learning and he keeps surprising. I’m so thankful for
my family, friends, you all, and my job, everything I do , and
opportunity, and that I wake up every day for a new adventure and to
meet people and to help them. Keeps it coming! Well, I just thought
today, my anniversary, I would let you know a bit more about me and
Steve. Here’s a picture of my daughter from Prom. She drove
Grammas’ new Camaro, because it matched her dress. I drove it, fast,
nice, but I wouldn’t run out to buy one. They could have gone 1 step
more. I drove a new challenger, that was sweet and more like the old
one. I’ll wait for the convertible Camaro in 2012, we’ll see.
