28th Street Metro Cruise 2010
It happens every year and it’s located in Grand Rapids, Wyoming and Kentwood, Michigan!
Basically it’s a cruise to end all cruises! Old Scooter was there with a meet-n-greet Scooters Garage table. Complete with some free Auto Round-Up issues. A special thanks to the many that stopped by!
Plus,THIS IS IT!
We’re talking well OVER 300,000 people and tens of thousands of cars of every possible year, style and type!
And hey! This biggie of an event is only a Friday and Saturday thing! Check it out on the web–Google for next August.
The weather was nice. The cars were nice and the people were real nice. I saw license plates from so darn many states I quit counting.
The Chamber of Commerce of Wyoming and Kentwood have garnered an outfit that runs things as smoothly as is possible with such massive numbers. There are so many foods areas, T-shirt sales and so much fun going on its hard to put to print the hour after hour of going ons. You can simply show up with an old car or not! Also, you can register and be more in the “know” of the separate shows and displays, etc. Or, you can get a program (old car or no old car) and still be informed, or if you are the non-structured style person? You can just drive up and down 28th Street or park at any number of places along 28th Street and be “in.” Bring the lawn chairs and a canopy, etc! It then becomes tailgate time!
I saw an Elvis standing up with half of his Vegas dressed body sticking out of a sun roof singing All Shook Up!
I saw a guy that literally was driving a horse car! I saw so many mint muscle cars, it would be easier to try to figure what year make and model wasn’t there. 409’s by the dozens, Hemi’s in a rainbow of colors. Judges, W-30’s, Rambler Scramblers & Rebel’s, Chevy Super Sports too many to pick one out of the “gang” of them cruising up and down 28th Street.
Grand Sports, GTs, GT 350 Hs, KRs Yenkos, 442s and many more. Gee! Best stop here. Suffice to say. Damn near every one of every kind ever built. Then my friends we will hit some more of the high spots of other styles and types of cars. Rat Rods, so cool you can’t imagine them! A 2×4’s, 426 Max Wedge powered one, a score of rat and OLD SKOOL custom trucks that are simply traffic stoppers. Tuner cars to die for! Some with double turbos, fiberglass / Lexan body kits and more.
There were Low Riders of every year, Bombers, 60’s and newbie’s, a jumping, a slamming and a tilting all over the place, cruising “low N slow! And us stuck in the mud (I.E., my car is a better mint car than yours) grey hairs ought to take note. The Low Rider crowd totally does their thing with the whole family! Grandpa, Grandma, the wife, the kids and the family dog! I love it!
And I also saw some really awesome actual custom cars. I’m talking 50′ and 60’s car’s with so many body modifications, that unless you have owned the exact same model and year of a stock car, you can’t even come close to list or observe the number of “lead sled” stuff that was done on them.
Paint jobs that are unbelievable and old Scooter was a body and paint man in the 60s’ and 70’s and some of the 80’s!
Wholly Cow! I am slipping! There were also scads of just about every year stock restored vehicle, trucks, cars, and even pre war vintage travel trailers! I have to step in here and say that Old Scooter has no idea of the correct term for what I call “newer tall wheeled cars”! You know, anything from an 80’s Caprice woody station wagon to a 1987 Regal to a 1994 Sedan Deville! Always in mint shape. With an “if it’s too loud you’re too old” stereo! Also, usually with a complete custom paint job! Or if not, they have someone paint the numbers of the size of rims they have on their ride in some loud wild candy or old skool large metal flake color on the side of the car. Like: 22’s or 24’s etc.
Damn it, I love it. Oh boy, were these guys and gals friendly to old Scooter. I talked to people that don’t have or aren’t into old cars that were there, “just because it’s such a good time!
In the various mall and larger store parking lots it was just like attending a car show. And if you want, you simply get back in your car, (again… an old one or the family Mini van), and drive a block or two and show up at another car showing area! There are actually real car shows going on in so many places I didn’t even bother to check them out! You getting the idea?! Huge amounts of happenings everywhere!
Come on over next August. Un-fold a chair, set down and let it happen around you or fire up anything, a Whizzer, a Cushman, a Schwinn, a Vespa, an old or new or some where in-between car or truck and be there cruising! See how many times you can run up and down 28th Street and not see the same car more than a couple of times going the other way.
Lots Of Cops, Too! On bikes, motorcycles, cars, horse back and on foot. It’s a fun time but don’t get stupid!
Having thrown out that word, next year be stupid! Just like the hundreds of thousands of people that were there last year with Scooter.
Harv stayed home and probably did something wrong. But I haven’t found it out yet!
The garage is quiet!
