Dean’s Auto Salvage
By Yvette VanderBrink
Minnesota is known as the land of 10,000 lakes–a fishing paradise. Tucked amongst the resorts and Pine trees in Brainerd, MN is Dean’s Auto Salvage. Richard Dean and his Wife Carla started the business on faith back in 1955. Richard was going to school for Pre-Med when he met his bride, Carla. Richard was burning the candle at both ends to make a better life for his new family. He was working for the Northern Pacific Railroad, delivering mail, and trying to go to college. In the middle of all this, he had the opportunity to help out a man with his towing business. He loved the old cars and the challenge of the tows. One night his boss, Lee Hartwig was killed while doing a tow call. Richard filled in the jobs after he and his wife prayed about the situation and felt that they should take on a new venture. Richard was approached by the widow about buying the business. Richard called his brother for a loan and went into business on borrowed money and a used tow truck and faith. He quit the other jobs and slowly the business grew into a salvage operation and so did the family. That was 52 years ago. Richard’s son, Rick, works selling parts at the counter and there are five other children scattered through the Midwest and US. Richard feels so blessed with his decision to buy that used tow truck. The business has opened many doors and has given him the chance to help people fix their cars. Richard helps you find your parts for your car. Now 72 years old, Richard and Carla are at another crossroad. The cities that surround them have been growing and they again have decisions to face. Richard called another salvage man- Art Nordstrom, of Nordstrom’s Auto Recycling in Garretson and asked for advice. Mr. Nordstrom said, “not being partial, but you better talk to my daughter about your old cars.”
VanDerbrink Auctions will conduct an auction on June 16th, 2007 at 10am of the old car inventory at Dean’s Auto Salvage in Brainerd, MN. There are approximately 254 collector cars/pickups many of which are for parts, but there are some for projects. There is everything from the 40’s through the early 70’s. The collection includes Chevrolet, Ford, Studebaker, and more. All will be sold at minimum bids of $200.00 and bidders can take the parts that they need and leave the hulks. There is also a large assortment of older parts that will also be sold. Richard would like the car collectors to come in and get the parts and cars that they need before the crusher comes. The old stuff is disappearing. Come for a fun day in the North Woods.
